Drip Edge Installation on an Existing Roof

A look at types of drip edge flashing, how to cut it, and how to retrofit it to an existing roof
March 02, 2023

In this video, Paul Ricalde from Paul's Toolbox demonstrates the process of cutting and installing drip edge roof flashing on his house. He covers two different types of drip edge and gives installation tips.

Tools needed for drip edge retrofit

To complete the drip edge installation, you'll need the following tools:

  • Aviation snips or tinning snips
  • Square
  • Flat bar
  • Knife
  • Hammer

Cutting two types of drip edge

Paul begins by explaining the differences between two types of drip edge and their cutting challenges. He demonstrates how to make an outside cut, emphasizing the importance of going deep into the tip and creating a V-shaped cut to facilitate bending.

For a drip edge with multiple bends, he showcases the process of making cuts and bending to achieve clean corners. Similarly, he demonstrates the cutting and bending technique for inside bends.

Installing drip edge under existing roof shingles

Paul emphasizes the use of gloves while cutting drip edge (do as I say, not as I do), and provides insights into retrofitting drip edge on an existing roof. He also shares tips for removing nails and loosening tar strips to prepare the area for drip edge installation.

Demonstrating the installation process, Paul shows how to tuck the drip edge in and make angle cuts to achieve a snug fit. He highlights the significance of ensuring the drip edge is positioned correctly under the shingles and the fascia. Finally, he emphasizes the importance of nailing at the right spots to prevent leaks.
